Texture matching simply means choosing extension hair with a texture that closely resembles your natural hair, or the texture you normally wear your hair in.

And it goes far beyond choosing between “straight” and “curly”.

When matching extensions, we look at things like:

• How straight or textured the hair is
• Curl or coil pattern
• Fullness and density
• How much body the hair has
• The thickness of the strands
• How smooth or fluffy the texture appears
• The hair’s natural shine or lustre

Imagine someone with thick, relaxed hair wearing extremely silky, bone-straight extensions.

Both textures are technically straight, but they can still look completely different.

The extensions have enough texture and body to complement relaxed hair without looking overly silky.

This combination can work beautifully for sew-ins, I-tips and other installations where some of the client’s natural hair remains visible.

Stretched natural hair + kinky-straight extensions

The slightly textured finish mimics blown-out or stretched natural hair.

The result can look much more believable than pairing the same natural hair with silky, bone-straight extensions.

Curly natural hair + similar curly extensions

When the curl size, density and overall finish are similar, the natural curls can disappear beautifully into the extensions without excessive manipulation.

Fine straight hair + smooth straight extensions

Texture matching does not always mean choosing more textured hair.

For naturally fine, straight hair, using extensions that are too heavy or textured can actually make blending harder. A finer, smoother extension may create the most natural result.

There is no single “best” extension texture.

There is only the texture that works best for your hair and the look you want to achieve.

Better Texture Matching Can Mean Less Heat

If your extensions are dramatically different from your natural hair, you may feel like you constantly have to manipulate your own hair to make the two match.
